About weapons
In my work I often have used the image of the arms of assault as a symbol, the signification of which has kept on varying within the context of my work.
In the work of the collective Stidna!, the fundamental one was the ambiguity of the weapon as a symbol. In one of our texts we said:
"The symbols are not universal, its interpretation changes from a place to another, from a person into another one. In our work we have used the image of the rifle of assault Kalashnikov AK-47 in more than one occasion. With this image we want to symbolize the call to the rebellion, not to the spill of blood. In spite of this we are conscious of this symbol, like all symbols, contains in its inside the good and the evil, a luminous side and a dark side, that in different environments will have different importance, different relative weights. A Czech, on seeing one of our works in which we used the AK-47, he saw in it the symbol of the oppression of his nation. But it is also true that in other countries the same symbol represents the liberation: some African country has still in its flag the profile of the AK-47 as a remembrance of the wars of decolonization. (July 1998)"
In my performances, the construction of the arms represents a symbolic component intimately related with the conceptual contents of the action.
In my recent work I use often the image of the arms of assault as "cultural objects" that can be present everywhere. In spite of having a very determinate apparent signification, I consider that as an image it contents a great ambiguity that allows multiple readings. In its utilization there is not any fascination for the object as such, but the confirmation of its universality as a present symbol in all modern cultures. In this way, my more recent work tries to establish bridges between social, cultural and political realities of the place where I develop my work and those of my place of origin through universally recognizable and translatable symbols.
